Glucosamine & Chondroitin For Joint Pain: Do They Work?

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are two supplements that you may see advertised for arthritis and related joint pain. Specifically, the aforementioned supplements are theorized to protect and support chondrocytes.

Chondrocytes are the cells that create and maintain cartilage which line the articulating surfaces of joints. You may see either glucosamine or chondroitin available for sale in places such as grocery stores or pharmacies. They can come in tablet, capsule, liquid or even powder form. As always it is a good idea to consult your doctor and/or pharmacist before taking any supplements.

FDA On Dietary Supplements

Currently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate dietary supplements in the same way it regulates medicines. A dietary supplement can be sold with limited or no research on how well it works. Current large and high quality research studies do not support the use of either supplement for slowing the progression of arthritis or reducing joint pain. Overall results from studies are conflicting, with some users having no changes while others do show small improvements. Some health groups such as The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) recommend that people with knee or hip osteoarthritis not use glucosamine or chondroitin.

Additionally, Glucosamine specifically can be problematic for individuals with shellfish allergies as a potential source of this supplement is ground shellfish coverings. In some situations glucosamine and chondroitin may also interfere with blood thinning drugs such as Coumadin and Warfarin.

Overall, these supplements are relatively safe and can be trialed once making your healthcare providers aware. However, if you are experiencing new or changing joint pain do not delay seeking medical attention in attempts to use supplements to resolve the pain.
